Spotlight: Center for Biological Diversity
The Center for Biological Diversity announced on March 10, 2010 that they were successful in helping to add 48 Kauai species to the Endangered Species Act. Due to a 2004 petition and two lawsuits filed by the Center for Biological Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the species would now be given the designation of critical habitat.
Many of the newly protected species are plants though two birds were also included on the list. Most of the species have been waiting decades for this protection.
Tierra Curry, conservation biologist at the Center for Biological Diversity has stated, “Protection for these species is long overdue. The 48 highly endangered species now have a shot at survival and recovery.”
The Center for Biological Diversity works through science, law, and creative media to secure a future for all species, great or small, hovering on the brink of extinction.
